North Room
Queen bedThe North Room
- The most cozy, private, and quiet room in the entire house. The North Room has an eclectic mid-century feel. Some of the décor has been with me for 35+ years. Let the sway of the branches of the Carolinian Dogwood tree outside of your original waterglass windows lull you to sleep. You’ll be all snuggled up in the vintage quilt and vintage pillow cases on your fluffy pillows.
- Your recently restored private bathroom stocked with most amenities, is the jewel of your stay. The original cast iron bathtub with a handheld shower couldn’t be more relaxing as you lean back and enjoy the sun streaming through the original waterglass window with breathtaking views of the peach orchards and vineyards.
- There is no air conditioning in the North Room. The sun doesn’t beat on this room, so it’s comfortable throughout the summer, especially when you turn on the fan at the end of your bed.

Common Areas
There are a few areas in the house just for guests to relax, read a book, play a game, or do a puzzle, chosen from our extensive library of classic literature and entertainment, all while enjoying a glass of wine.
The library/sitting room is between the bedrooms at the top of the broad, easy to navigate staircase. There is a communal fridge to chill your favourite beverages, and keep your meds & leftovers cold. Check out the 1950s RCA AM radio to tune in stations from far and wide.
The front entry/library is also a space to relax and view the outdoors through the screen door during inclement weather.
The front walk, as well as the entire front yard, is at your disposal to wander amongst the trees and wild plantings. The smoking area is under the chestnut tree at the millstone. The late afternoon-early evening is particularly lovely to watch the sun go down with a favourite beverage picked up at a local winery or brewery. Heavenly.
FAQ
Who is Elsie?
Ask me.
My name is Chrystal and I’m a self employed entrepreneur since 1993, and work my guts out 24/7.
My main hustles are Weirdorama-vintage fashion, and I’m the promoter of The St. Catharines Record Show. My partner Larry is a Professional Design Engineer of pressure vessels worldwide. Could we be any more different? I think not! We’re in the process of repairing and conserving this 1819 brick house, and we’re taking you all along for the ride.

How many cats live at the House of Elsie?
Feline Residents of The House of Elsie
Bob
Our senior, Brown Tabby, working cat. He was born the spring of 2008 in the neighbours backyard at our previous address. Bob turned in his feral card and retired when he moved into the big house here in NOTL.
Grace
“Princess” Grace has Tortitude down to a fine art. Grace is an apricot toned Torbie Norwegian Forest Cat. She came into my life right after my soulmate cat, Pink, went missing (this is still, and will be until I die, fresh). Grace was still a kitten hanging out in the doorway of my regular coffee shop. The staff thought she may have been Pink. The spring of 2013, I scooped her up on the spot, didn’t even stop for my coffee, and took her home.
Pyrite
This story is still so weird and random. In 2016, I was working our farmers’ market in Fort Erie, and heard to my left on the sidewalk, “I took them out for fresh air”. I saw two cat carriers on the roof of a run-down car loaded with Siamese kittens. The breeder had become homeless and was living out of her car with 9 kittens and two adult female Siamese cats. She gifted me an 8 week old seal point Siamese kitten. Even though I offered her money, produce, preserves to help her out, she flatly refused. It was a heartbreaking situation. Pyrite is a tiny neurotic cat with a Napolean complex.
Barbie & Mable
These two sisters are semi-feral foster fails from NOTL Cats here in town. They came to us as fosters in 2023 to prepare them for their forever homes with another family. Well, we failed, and they stayed. Barbie, the gray spotted Torbie is totally the “Come on Barbie, Let’s go Party” girl. Mable, a magnificent, black marbled Torbie, is silently plotting to take over the ruling of the other inhabitants of The House of Elsie, then the world. As a benevolent leader of course, with the occasional love bite to keep us all in line.
What type of breakfast is usually served?
Breakfast will be of a more traditional fare, historic in nature, incorporating what’s in season in the garden, and eggs from our girls out back. Vegetarian and vegan options are one of our specialties.
